OSU Extension staff is located at Terrace Place at 99 E. Ninth Street, between Indianola Avenue and N. High Street. OSU Extension continues to have a presence in SFC and offers first of the month Saturday workshop classes including Financial Literacy and Home Buyer Education at the 175 East 7th Avenue location.
Through community partnerships, OSU Extension improves the lives of residents by empowering them with the resources and skills essential in helping them become economically independent. The University District team offers help with workforce development, individual development accounts, homeownership, post-secondary education, tax preparation, infant mortality, prison and re-entry programs to strengthen the lives of Weinland Park area families through research-based educational programming.
Community development staff help families:
- navigate the mortgage process to purchase a home
- understand financial planning, banking, and budgeting
- start or expand a business
- pursue post-secondary education
- improve their nutrition choices
- promote positive parent/child relationships
- increase their health and wellness through physical activity
- advance their technology skills
Extension counselors serve an average of 50 students a week through:
- GED preparation
- workforce development training
- computer classes
Homebuyer Incentives: Thinking of buying a home or rental property in Weinland Park or near east side neighborhoods? To help you through the process, OSU Extension is offering free HUD certified and City of Columbus approved homebuyer two-session education workshops on Saturdays (8/5 and 8/12 or 9/9 and 9/16) from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Schoenbaum Family Center. Up to $5,000 in down payment and closing cost assistance is available to income eligible participants. Read more and register.
In collaboration with Godman Guild Association, Extension staff also offers financial literacy training to hundreds of 15 to 24 year olds enrolled each year in the Summer Youth Employment Program sponsored by the City of Columbus, Franklin County and the Central Ohio Workforce Investment Corporation.
